Because the Holga has very simple exposure controls, negative films are generally much easier to shoot than slide (E-6) film and produce more forgiving results.
Shooting Tips
The Holga advances film using the frame numbers printed on the backing paper, which are viewed through the red frame counter window on the back of the camera.
Many experienced Holga photographers cover this window with black electrical, gaffer, or photo tape between shots to help reduce the possibility of light entering the camera. When advancing to the next frame, simply lift the tape briefly in subdued light to view the next frame number, then cover the window again before shooting. This extra step is especially popular when shooting color film in bright sunlight.
Don't be afraid to embrace imperfections. Light leaks, soft edges, slight blur, and unpredictable results are all part of what has made the Holga a favorite among artists and film photographers for decades.
