Lucky C400 is a newly released ISO 400 color negative 35mm film from China Lucky Film, the historic Chinese film manufacturer returning to the consumer color film market with a new generation of C-41 stocks.
Following the release of Lucky C200, C400 adds a full stop of speed while offering improved color rendering and a more versatile everyday film. Expect strong, distinctive colors, medium visible grain, and moderately high contrast with the unique color character that has quickly become associated with the new Lucky films.
Early testing has shown noticeably improved color reproduction compared with C200, particularly through secondary colors, while maintaining the slightly characterful rendering that separates Lucky from more established Kodak and Fujifilm stocks. Highlights hold up particularly well, though C400 is less forgiving of significant underexposure, so accurate metering is recommended for the best results.
At ISO 400, it is a great all-around option for street photography, travel, portraits, overcast weather, and changing daylight conditions where a little more speed is useful. It can be processed normally in standard C-41 chemistry at virtually any color film lab.
Lucky Film has manufactured photographic materials in China since 1958 and has recently returned to consumer film production after years away from the market. C400 is part of its new generation of color negative films and remains relatively difficult to find in the U.S.
