Introduced in 2001 as the successor to the Olympus D-490 Zoom, the D-510 Zoom was the North American version of the Olympus C-200 Zoom. It was positioned as an easy-to-use compact digital camera while still offering features such as exposure compensation, spot metering, selectable ISO settings, multiple white-balance settings, continuous shooting, and an optical viewfinder. At its heart is an early 2.1-megapixel CCD sensor producing images up to 1600 × 1200 pixels. The camera is equipped with an f/2.8–4.4 3x optical zoom lens covering approximately 35–105mm equivalent, plus digital zoom for up to 9x combined magnification. The low-resolution CCD sensor, early digital processing, optical viewfinder, silver body, and SmartMedia format make the D-510 a great example of a true turn-of-the-millennium digicam. Unlike later ultra-thin digital cameras, it retains the substantial body and controls characteristic of first-generation consumer digital photography.
