AS-IS ITEM – FAULTY CLAMSHELL POWER SWITCH: The camera has been tested and its primary functions operate, including lens extension and zoom, autofocus response, shutter, flash, LCD, and film transport functions. However, the sliding clamshell/lens barrier does not reliably hold the camera’s power switch in the correct position. The camera may attempt to power on while the clamshell is closed and may unexpectedly shut off when the clamshell is open.
The camera works properly when the clamshell is held firmly in the fully open position, but normal reliable operation cannot be guaranteed without repairing the clamshell switch mechanism. Because the camera can unexpectedly power off when pressure is released from the clamshell, it is being sold AS-IS for repair or use with this known defect.
This appears consistent with a documented issue affecting other Olympus Stylus Zoom 170 cameras. One owner traced the problem to wear/play in the small switch underneath the sliding cover, which allowed the switch to move between its ON and OFF positions even when the cover itself was stationary. Their DIY repair involved carefully removing the clamshell and adding thin plastic shims inside its sliding track to reduce the excess clearance and keep the switch positively positioned.
